New Delhi: The Government of India has invested ₹1.85 lakh crore in strengthening power distribution infrastructure under various schemes, leading to increased electricity access and reduced supply gaps, according to the Economic Survey 2025.
Under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) and the Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS) introduced in 2014, along with the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA) launched in 2017, 18,374 villages have been electrified, and 2.9 crore households have gained access to electricity.
The Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, launched in July 2021, has been implemented to improve the quality and reliability of power supply. With a total outlay of ₹3.0 lakh crore and gross budgetary support of ₹97,631 crore for FY22 to FY26, projects worth ₹2.8 lakh crore have been approved for distribution infrastructure upgrades and smart metering solutions.
The daily average power supply has increased from 22.1 hours in urban areas in FY14 to 23.4 hours in FY24 and from 12.5 hours in rural areas in FY14 to 21.9 hours in FY24. The energy demand-supply gap has declined from 4.2% in FY14 to 0.1% as of December 2024.
