New Delhi: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has revoked Stage-III restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the National Capital Region (NCR) following a significant improvement in Delhi’s air quality. The city’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 289 on Thursday, categorized as “Very Poor,” marking a sharp decline from the “Severe” levels earlier this week.
The decision to relax Stage-III restrictions was taken after a detailed review by the CAQM Sub-Committee. On January 15, Delhi’s AQI breached the 350 mark, triggering Stage-III and Stage-IV restrictions. The AQI improved to 302 on January 16, leading to the withdrawal of Stage-IV measures, while Stage-III restrictions were retained as a precaution. The current AQI, coupled with favorable forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), supported the decision to lift Stage-III measures.
“Today’s AQI level is 61 points below the benchmark set by the Supreme Court for invoking Stage-III restrictions,” the CAQM said in a statement. “IMD and IITM forecasts indicate that air quality is likely to remain at the lower end of the ‘Very Poor’ category in the coming days.”
The CAQM emphasized that actions under Stage-I and Stage-II of GRAP will remain in force. “Agencies must ensure strict implementation of measures under these stages to prevent further deterioration in air quality,” the statement added.
Construction and demolition sites previously issued closure orders for violations will not be permitted to resume operations without explicit clearance from the Commission. The CAQM also urged citizens to adhere to the GRAP citizen charter, particularly during the winter months when unfavorable weather conditions can exacerbate pollution levels.
“While Stage-III measures are being revoked, the situation requires continued vigilance,” the CAQM said. “We will closely monitor air quality and review the scenario periodically to take appropriate action if necessary.”
The Sub-Committee’s decision underscores the importance of balancing public health concerns with minimizing disruptions caused by restrictive measures. Stakeholders have been advised to remain alert and ensure compliance with existing protocols.
