Gandhinagar: State energy minister Kanu Desai, who is part of the delegation at the COP29 being held at Baku in Azerbaijan, said that Gujarat is positioned to be a leading force in India’s clean energy transition. The state’s efforts extend to emerging areas like green hydrogen, positioning Gujarat as a global hub for sustainable economic growth and renewable energy innovation.
Speaking at the conference, Desai highlighted Gujarat’s proactive stance in India’s clean energy transition. The state set ambitious targets to scale up its renewable energy capacity and achieve energy self-reliance by 2047, marking the centenary of India’s independence.
Commenting on Gujarat’s ‘Mission 100 GW‘ of renewable energy (RE), Desai said the ambitious initiative aims to significantly scale up Gujarat’s renewable capacity and make it a leading force in India’s clean energy transition. Desai emphasised that fostering a business-friendly environment, attracting investments and driving innovation are critical components of this mission.
Highlighting the state’s role in the offshore wind energy sector at a bilateral meeting with representatives from the Climate Investment Fund (CIF) and leading international stakeholders, Desai said Gujarat has an estimated 35-40 GW of offshore wind potential. He added that multinational companies are partnering with Gujarat for offshore wind energy investments.
The state delegation also engaged in discussions with representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at COP29. A govt statement said the discussions focused on achieving zero emissions by 2047, leveraging green technologies and ensuring a just energy transition.
