New Delhi: The ministry of heavy industries is set to release a 10 gigawatt Request for Proposal (RFP) for grid-scale energy storage systems, said Vijay Mittal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, during the International Summit on Lithium-Ion Batteries hosted by the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA). Addressing the gathering via video conferencing, Mittal said the RFP will be issued in collaboration with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and NITI Aayog.

Mittal said, “This initiative will contribute to India’s efforts towards developing indigenous capabilities in manufacturing battery energy storage systems with advanced chemistry cells, crucial for both grid-scale energy storage and electric vehicle (EV) mobility.”

The summit, held at the India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi, witnessed the participation of over 300 industry leaders discussing key issues like R&D, manufacturing, supply chain, and recycling of lithium-ion batteries. The government’s progressive ACC-PLI scheme is expected to significantly boost battery manufacturing capacity, with over 40 gigawatt-hours out of a targeted 50 gigawatts already allocated to various OEMs.

Debi Prasad Dash, President, IESA, said, “The lithium-ion battery industry is central to India’s clean energy transition, and this summit aims to establish a roadmap for scaling up production in India.” India is expected to see a cumulative demand of 600-900 GWh of lithium batteries by 2032, driven by electric mobility and energy storage needs.

The country imported $3.59 billion worth of lithium-ion batteries in FY 2023, with over 100 companies engaged in battery pack manufacturing. The summit highlighted the need for increasing domestic production capacity to reduce reliance on imports and meet the growing demand. Dr. Rahul Walwalker, Chairman of IESA, noted that global manufacturing capacity outside China is expected to grow to 1,000-1,500 gigawatt-hours in the next decade, creating significant opportunities for India’s supply chain.
