The Italian men’s team staged a protest at the pool before their water polo classification match against Spain on Friday, Paris time, after their appeal over a player being sent off during their quarter-final loss to Hungary was rejected by World Aquatics.
The jury of appeals found Italian Francesco Condemi should not have been penalised but could not overturn the decision.
“Upon further review of evidence that was not available at the time of the decision, including additional video match footage, the Italian player struck the face of the Hungarian player defending him in the normal act of shooting,” World Aquatics said in a statement.
“World Aquatics acknowledges that this play should not have resulted in the player being called for committing a violent action. However, while sympathising with Italy, the jury of appeals could not overturn the decision.”
Hungary won, 12-10, over Italy in a penalty shootout (1 -3). Italy were not happy, turning their back on the pool for the anthems before their match against Spain on Friday. Here’s a pic of the protest.
