Brazil’s green power surge leads G20 with 89% renewable electricity, ET EnergyWorld

New Delhi: In a striking demonstration of renewable energy leadership, Brazil has emerged as the top performer among G20 countries in harnessing green power. According to the latest findings from the global energy think tank Ember, Brazil generated a remarkable 89% of its electricity from renewable sources in 2023, significantly outpacing the global average of 30%.

Kostantsa Rangelova, an analyst at Ember, lauded Brazil’s achievements, stating, “Brazil is a renewables superpower. Having a robust foundation in hydroelectric power, Brazil has adeptly expanded its renewable portfolio to embrace wind and solar energies, setting a commendable example for the G20 nations to emulate.”

Hydropower has long been the backbone of Brazil’s energy sector, but recent years have seen a surge in wind and solar contributions. In 2023, these two energy sources alone accounted for 21% of Brazil’s total electricity output, a steep rise from just 6% in 2016. Furthermore, Brazil registered the second-largest annual increase in wind and solar generation globally, trailing only behind China.

This renewable energy expansion has also positioned Brazil as the G20 member with the lowest power sector emissions per capita. As global concerns about climate change intensify, Brazil’s strategy presents a viable model for sustainable growth. The country has successfully managed to curb its reliance on fossil fuels, aligning its energy consumption with environmental preservation efforts.

Brazil’s proactive approach to renewable energy not only underscores its commitment to sustainable practices but also offers a blueprint for other countries. “By following Brazil’s example, G20 countries can lead the global transition to a sustainable energy future,” added Rangelova.

Despite the overall progress, the global scenario remains challenging. While the majority of G20 nations have seen their power sector emissions peak and decline in recent years, collective emissions across the group are still on an upward trajectory, primarily due to rising demands in emerging economies.

Brazil’s story is particularly relevant today as it demonstrates the impact of early and sustained political commitment to renewable energy, comprehensive policy frameworks, and effective utilization of natural resources. These elements have been crucial in Brazil’s journey towards an environmentally sustainable future, significantly reducing power sector emissions while catering to growing energy needs.

As the 2023 G20 host, Brazil not only showcases its achievements but also sets a high standard for international cooperation on climate action, urging other nations to intensify their efforts towards achieving global sustainability goals.
