MNRE announces second tranche of green hydrogen incentive scheme, targets 450,000 TPA, ET EnergyWorld

New Delhi: The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has notified the Scheme Guidelines for the second tranche of the “Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme – Component II: Incentive Scheme for Green Hydrogen Production” on July 3, 2024. This initiative aims to expand India‘s green hydrogen production capacity to 450,000 tonnes per annum (TPA).

Of the total capacity, 40,000 TPA has been earmarked for biomass-based pathways, known as bucket-II, with the remainder allocated to technology-agnostic pathways, or bucket-I. The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) will continue as the implementing agency for this tranche.

SECI is set to issue the Request for Selection (RfS) shortly, which will outline the process for competitive bidding based on the least average incentive quoted by the bidders. The minimum bidding capacity under bucket-I is set at 10,000 TPA, while the maximum reaches 90,000 TPA. For bucket-II, the range is between 500 TPA as the minimum and 4,000 TPA as the maximum. A single bidder may be allocated up to 90,000 TPA across both buckets.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched on January 4, 2023, with a funding of Rs. 19,744 crore up to FY 2029-30, underpins this initiative. It aims to contribute to India’s ambition to become self-reliant through clean energy and to lead the global clean energy transition. The mission is designed to significantly reduce the nation’s carbon footprint, decrease dependence on fossil fuel imports, and establish India as a leader in green hydrogen technology and markets.
